August 14, 2019Australia has many great opportunities to work, either while you are studying or when you graduate. In order to ensure you get the best chance and do the right thing, tailoring your CV for the Australian employer is essential. Next, we explain how to do it. We have also included our reference format. It features the best advice from industry professionals and HR representatives to ensure your CV stands on top of the rest and helps you land the job you want.
1- Carta de presentación
- You must include a formal letter addressed to the employer to present your CV and explain why you think you are the best candidate for the job.
- The letter must be correctly formatted with your information, the details of the employer, the date, who it is addressed to, and it must have your signature.
- Make sure that the letter is written in short paragraphs, is clear and easy to read in a simple font and size 10-11.
- Whenever possible avoid generic terms like "Dear Sir or Madam" and include the name of the hiring manager if possible.
- If you are responding to a job advertisement that lists "required skills or attributes," use the cover letter to demonstrate those skills. Be concise, but try to give examples when possible.
- Your cover letter should be no more than one A4 page. Don't try to cheat by creating narrow margins or smaller fonts! Get straight to the point.
2- Personal information
- Clearly list your personal details at the top of the page.
- Use a professional email address, usually [email protected]. Don't use personal accounts with usernames that could be harmful.
3- Strong points
Depending on the job, it is possible to list your key strengths. These strengths can be technical skills, such as "Microsoft Office Suite proficiency" or "Customer Service," or they can be soft skills, such as "honest," "trustworthy, or" passionate. " The job advertisement will be a good place to identify what the employer is looking for.
4- Work experience
- Summarize your work experience, clearly stating the dates you held the position, your job title, and the company.
- Ideally for each job, you will list 1-2 sentences of what your responsibilities were, and 1-2 key success stories from that role - think big! It could be something you take for granted, such as "I got compliments from the client three times in a month," or it could be something more instantly recognizable like “I managed a project from start to finish”. This will all depend on how much space you have and what job you are applying for.
- Typically, work experience and education (see below) are listed in chronological order. However, if your work experience or education prior to your most recent job allows, you can tailor your CV to a functional or skill-based order. This means that the most relevant experience is listed first.
5- Education and training
- As mentioned above, please list any education and training you have received.
6- References
- Try to include 2-3 references, ideally professional references from previous jobs or work experience. Educational references are also good options. If you don't have work or education references, you can use character references (usually family or friends).
Some tips to remember:
- Always try to include a cover letter, formatted correctly.
- If you are responding to a job advertisement, use your CV to show how you fit what they are looking for.
- Try to keep your cover letter to one page and your resume between 1 and 2 pages, depending on your experience and the job you are applying for.
- Make sure the font is consistent at all times; triple check that colors, sizes and styles are all consistent.
- Check there are no spelling mistakes. This is a huge red flag for employers who may interpret it as a lack of attention to detail. So, have someone you trust check it for you and use the spell check set to English (ideally Australian English) whenever possible.
- Be positive! Sometimes finding a job can take a long time for the most qualified people, but it is essential to keep trying. The next best opportunity is around the corner!
- To get started, you can search the web for an Australian CV template and use it as the basis for your own CV. Then you adapt the CV for each job.
