You keep the same TFN for life, even if you later change your name, employment or residency. It is your own personal identification number that you will need when lodging your tax return. You also need a TFN to get an Australian Business Number (ABN).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is not compulsory to have a TFN, but without one, you will pay more tax.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Applying for a TFN is free to do and can be done at the link here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How do you request a TFN?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You need to apply to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) for a TFN.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can apply online if you meet the following criteria:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You are a foreign passport holder, permanent resident or temporary visitor;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You have a valid passport or travel documents;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You are in Australia; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You hold one of the following visas:<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013a permanent visa;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 a visa with work rights;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 a Student Visa; or<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 a visa which allows you to stay indefinitely in Australia.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ATO will confirm your details with the Department of Home Affairs. It is separate from a TFN and is used for various tax and business matters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To be issued with an ABN, you must be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abr.gov.au\/business-super-funds-charities\/applying-abn\/abn-entitlement#Whatcarryingonanenterprisemeans\" target=\"_self\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">starting or carrying on an enterprise<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. This includes activities performed in a business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\"><b>You cannot apply for an ABN if you are working as an employee<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which means you are working in someone else\u2019s business. If you are running your own business, you will be classified as a contractor and are entitled to an ABN. Sometimes, it can be less clear whether you are an employee or a contractor. You can save your application and return at a later time (before it expires) to complete it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abr.gov.au\/ABRWeb\/ReturnToApplication.abr?pid=71\" target=\"_self\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before you apply, you will need the following information:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 your TFN;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 the date when you require an ABN (normally the date when you expect to start business activities);<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 the legal name of your entity;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 authorised contacts;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 business contact details (e.g. an address, postal address, email address and telephone number);<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">- business activity; and<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 business location\/s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Other information may also be required, depending on your personal circumstances.
